Preview: “Chicago Styled: Fashioning the Magnificent Mile” Exhibit — Style.com

In the past decade, the Chicago History Museum has celebrated the life and works of Christian Dior, Charles James, and American businesswoman and socialite Bertha Palmer, but its latest fashion exhibit, Chicago Styled: Fashioning the Magnificent Mile, hits closer to home.

“Each piece featured tells a greater Chicago story,” says curator of costume Petra Slinkard. Thus, the 26 designer looks featured (which date from the late 1950s to the early 1990s) are specifically connected to North Michigan Avenue. For instance, Gianni Versace himself, on the occasion of his Chicago store opening, donated a linked metal mesh evening gown.
